Parks and Gardens of Bratislava

When you want to unwind and spend some time outside, we recommend heading to one of the city's green spaces. Getting outdoors doesn't just calm your mind — it's good for your physical health too. Bratislava is full of beautiful parks and gardens, so let's take a look at the best places you can visit to enjoy some nature.

1. Sad Janka Kráľa City Park

Founded between 1774 and 1776 on the right bank of the Danube, Sad Janka Kráľa is considered the oldest public park in Central Europe. It's known for its circular garden "rooms" decorated with zodiac motifs. The park is also home to some remarkable old trees — its maple-leaf plane trees are around 200 years old. Today it functions as a lively meeting point and sports area for locals of all ages, and it also has its own skatepark and a café.

2. The Botanical Garden

Belonging to Bratislava's Comenius University and opened to everyone, the Botanical Garden was founded in 1942 and sits right by the Danube River. It is spread across 5.5 hectares and brings together an impressive mix of flora both outside and in the greenhouses. The garden is open daily from April through October, and guided tours can be arranged on request.

3. Baroque Garden at Bratislava Castle

Experience a Baroque-style garden next to Bratislava Castle, which was designed in the 18th century during Maria Theresa’s reign and reconstructed in 2016. There you will see symmetrical flowerbeds, boxwood hedges, a central fountain, linden tree alleys, and exquisite statues. Besides, you will be able to take a walk around the castle and sightsee the city and the Danube River just next to it.

4. Grassalkovich Garden

The gardens of a Presidential Palace are ranked as the most beautiful historical sites. It was established as part of the summer residence of Count Anton I Grassalkovich in the 18th century. This garden reflects the style of French Baroque gardens. These days the Garden offers both a place for recreation and a lively atmosphere during civic events. 

5. Medická Garden

A charming, so-called Baroque classicism, Medická Garden attracts visitors to unwind and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. No sculptures or significant architecture have remained from the original decoration. Nevertheless, it still has some works of art, such as the swan fountain, designed by Pavol Mikšík, which forms the central space of the garden. 

6. Bratislava Forest Park

Bratislava Forest Park covers an enormous 27.3 square kilometres on the edge of the city. It is almost entirely woodland, with the rest made up of meadows and small areas of water with rich flora and fauna. With its extensive network of trails and roads, it's the perfect destination if you're after a longer hike or a proper escape into nature without leaving the city behind. Here you should visit some well-loved spots, including Železná studienka, Partizánska lúka, the Koliba district, and the iconic Kamzík TV Tower.

7. Horský Park

Horský Park (Mountain park) is one of Bratislava's oldest parks, dating back to the late 19th century. The park was created during the period of realism, during which naturalistic landscaping was promoted. Today the park includes the historic Mountain Park lodge for recreation, a children’s playground, Horský Park Gallery, and a nice café with an excellent coffee.

8. Water Garden

Set within the grounds of the Bratislava Waterworks Museum, the Water Garden is a small but delightful spot. It centres around a purpose-built water feature with fountains that children can splash around in, alongside more traditional playground equipment like swings and slides. There's also a sheltered picnic area, making it a great choice for an outing, and for active and passive leisure.

9. SNP Park

The entire park is surrounded by forest, providing a calm place to enjoy nature. SNP park is centrally crossed by an asphalt road with an approximate width of 6.5 metres, the rest of the surface is a grassy area. You can find a monument to the victims of World War II in the center of the park. Different activities are provided along the trail: an educational trail, places for barbecues, covered gazebos with seating, a street workout playground and benches, so you may find an activity you enjoy the most in this park.
