Frederik, a 23-year-old Danish student, had a passion for international experience and took the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus internship program. Frederik shared with us his journey, from the first moments of anxiety to exceeding expectations, and how Slovakia fascinated him in unexpected ways.

While an internship was mandatory for his program, Frederik was actively looking for international experience. After participating in previous Erasmus programs in Italy and Germany, he was eager to explore a new country and culture. Slovakia attracted him because of the positive experiences of Slovak friends he met abroad.

Frederik's internship at a reinsurance company exceeded his expectations. Frederick was worried that he would simply be involved in manual tasks, however he was entrusted with real responsibilities. “I have worked with many new software programs (SAP, TRAX, GTS/GTX among others). I have assessed payments for potential money-laundering issues and I have been in contact with banks/different teams about problematic payments”

Despite his previous work experience, this was Frederic's first office job. The initial responsibility was intimidating, but his colleagues helped supported him during his training. “They have been amazing - I came into a very dynamic team where they were used to regular newcomers. Therefore, they were used to getting in people who don't know much about the job.”

At the end of his five-month internship, Frederic felt confident and a valuable member of the team. He expressed a sadness that he was leaving the program just as he was becoming more proficient.

Based on his previous experience abroad, Frederic offers valuable advice to future interns. He emphasizes that you need to be open-minded and accept the initial challenges. He emphasizes that it is very easy to make friends with other international students who have similar experiences.

Outside of work, Frederik enjoyed exploring Slovakia and neighboring countries such as Hungary and Poland. He participated in the company's badminton and running clubs and played soccer with a local group. These activities not only provided physical exercise but also helped him build social connections. “I met so many people and made more friends that I have made throughout 20 years in Denmark.”

One of the Slovak customs that surprised Frederik was the friendly practice of runners waving at each other on the treadmills. This small gesture, in contrast to the reserved Danish culture, became an unexpected source of encouragement for him.

The internship not only met but exceeded Frederik's expectations. He is grateful for such valuable practical skills and real-world experience.

Frederik's story is another example of the success of the Erasmus internship program. It gave him the opportunity to gain professional experience, develop cultural awareness and build strong friendships. His positive experience serves as an inspiration for future students looking for international internship opportunities.

We are very happy for him and continue to do our best to provide such an experience to as many students as possible.
